Chapter 12: Sisterhood and Sabotage

I don’t know what Rachel told Nathan, but that night he stopped me in the garden by the koi pond.

"Madison." He looked at me, stone-faced. "Withdraw from the centennial performance."

I grinned. "Nathan, did you forget your meds?"

He barely blinked. "This isn’t a request. If you go onstage, I’ll cut your credit cards."

I stopped, meeting his eyes. "Your sweet girl’s had a decade of piano lessons and she’s scared to compete? What a waste of money."

The night before the show, we crammed into the dressing room, giggling as we pinned hair and swapped lip gloss, the air thick with nerves and hairspray. For the first time in ages, I felt like I belonged somewhere.
