My thoughts returned to the present. I was woken by Monica’s call, my face wet with tears.

I wiped my face and answered. Monica’s voice was barely able to contain her excitement.

"Aubrey, honey, did you misunderstand your relationship with Ethan Carter?"

My heart thudded, hope and dread twisting together. Was I about to get my life back—or lose it all for good?
